Why become a pilates instructor?

Becoming a certified Pilates teacher opens a new world of opportunities for you.

You can make a life long career of teaching or just teach part-time as a side hustle. Our goal is to train teachers who WANT to make teaching a part of their lives and become passionate and competent Pilates teachers! Yet, even if you’re not planning on teaching, going through our program will allow you to dive deeper into your practice and discover what your body is capable of.

What makes THE LAB different?

This program balances learning the history, origins and exercises of classical Pilates with the contemporary adaptations, updates and thought processes that we find are essential in providing successful outcomes for clients in today’s modern world.

Not only will you learn the perfect blend of classical and contemporary Pilates to

teach in our program, but you will learn how to become a GREAT teacher for both group classes and private Pilates sessions. Teaching is an art form. You’ll learn industry tips and tricks to challenge your clients, how to cue effectively, choreograph classes, and modify for injuries so that every person in your class and private sessions feel successful.

Program Details

Our 500-HR program includes 6 weekends of in-person training, 75 hours of observation, 95 hours of self-practice, and 130 hours of practice teaching.

You will be taught every step of the way by The Pilates Studio’s seasoned teachers and owners, Kimberly Kolesar and Emily Sharpe. They are passionate about this wonderful training program and have infused it with all their own personal trainings, teaching experiences and movement backgrounds!

In Studio Lecture:

Over the course of 6 weekends, we will learn Anatomy, History of Pilates/Scope of Practice (as required by the PMA®) and a breakdown of every exercise according to choreography, muscle focus, and contraindications. We also spend time learning how to put together programming for private sessions, duets and group classes.

Self-Practice Hours (95 hours):

A minimum number of hours practicing on your own, either in our p.s. studios, following your manuals, along with DVD’s/online or in other studios.

Practice Teaching Hours (130 hours):

After the first weekend, we encourage you to begin teaching to other people. Anyone you can get your hands on: friends, significant others and family. The more body types you see moving, the better!

Observation Hours (75 hours):

Preferably done in one of our p.s. studios although not required, watching experienced instructors teaching others is one of the best ways to absorb information, see how they set-up sessions, correct clients and cue the exercises.

Upon completion of your hours, you will schedule a date to take your Practical exam. Upon passing both a written and practical exam, you will be a Certified Pilates Teacher!

Kimberly Kolesar, NCPT

Owner of Wash Park and Highlands / Teacher

Kimberly Kolesar is a nationally certified and comprehensively trained Pilates instructor and has been teaching the method for over 13 years. She was certified through PH7 Pilates, a classical training program following the lineages of Romana Kryzanowska and Kathy Grant. Kimberly first found Pilates as a way of managing chronic hip, knee and back pain sustained from scoliosis, labral hip tears and years of wear and tear as a competitive dancer. The personal experience of the healing powers of Pilates was what led her to get certified to teach. She later opened The Pilates Studio in 2014, along with a second location in 2021, with fellow teacher and business partner Emily Sharpe. Kimberly is a compassionate teacher who will push her clients to achieve their personal best. She is passionate about helping her clients move pain-free and help them learn how to strengthen and love their bodies through injuries and issues. Kimberly’s teaching style integrates a classical flow with contemporary modifications and functional movement patterning. She holds certifications in numerous other specialties including Pilates for Scoliosis and Pre & Post-natal Pilates. She is also a licensed instructor of the medically-endorsed Pilates for Buff Bones® workout program and a 2016 graduate of Master Pilates Instructor, Cara Reeser’s, Kathy Grant Heritage Teacher Training Program. Kimberly constantly deepens her knowledge of movement by attending workshops and seminars from world-renowned teachers to keep informed with the current techniques and philosophies in the industry.

When not in the studio, Kimberly takes time for morning lattes, bike rides on her Schwinn cruiser, laughing with friends, family and enjoying life with her husband Mike, daughter Emalin & puppy Louise. The Pilates Studio is her labor of love, welcoming all that want to feel good, look good and enjoy the benefits of practicing Pilates for life!

Emily Sharpe, NCPT

Owner of Highlands / Teacher

Emily Sharpe is a nationally certified and comprehensively trained Pilates instructor through Balanced Body. She has been practicing Pilates for over 16 years and teaching Pilates for over 10 years. Emily brings movement knowledge, passion and attention to detail to each session. Her teaching style blends classical and contemporary with emphasis on proper form, functional movement patterns and variety to her classes. An avid hiker, Emily has climbed all 58 of Colorado’s peaks over 14,000 feet (14'ers), Mount Kilimanjaro, California’s Mount Whitney and Mount Rainier in Washington. This passion helps her understand the importance of Pilates and its ability to help support one's body to do big and challenging endeavors! She thrives working one on one with her students and empowering her students to find their strength and confidence in their movement. In addition to Pilates she has been trained in the Balanced Body MOTR and the BODHI Suspension System and has been mentored by many Pilates and movement professionals from around the world. She is also a 2018 graduate of Master Pilates Instructor Cara Reeser’s Kathy Grant Heritage Training Program. Emily is always expanding her knowledge of the body and movement in general through workshops, seminars and by consistently taking classes herself.
